PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek and Sony Agree to Cooperate to Deploy FeliCa Contactless Cards, Wristbands and NFC Mobile Phones in Transportation Network in Jakarta, Indonesia

Tokyo, Japan – WEBWIRE

Sony Corporation (“Sony”) today announced that PT.KAI COMMUTER JABODETABEK (KCJ), a leading rail operator in Indonesia, will adopt FeliCa technology for its IC ticket operation. KCJ operates a rail system covering the metropolitan area of Jakarta, with 64 stations covering 182 km and serving 700,000 passengers on a daily basis.

KCJ plans to launch contactless card tickets as well as FeliCa embedded wristbands and NFC mobile phone service to provide passengers with a number of attractive options for traveling efficiently on its rail network. Starting in February 2015 with the new card and wristband, KCJ plans to expand its supported devices from the middle of 2015 to also include NFC mobile phones, in order to allow a large volume of passengers to benefit from a variety of convenient (FeliCa) contactless form factors.

Sony FeliCa technology has been widely deployed to support a number of applications including transportation ticketing as well as electronic money and ID, and has been selected for major deployments and projects in a number of markets. FeliCa technology has been chosen due to its high security, the high overall performance capability of the technology including high transaction speed processing as well as many other features.

“KCJ wants to harness Sony`s experience in providing FeliCa card as well as mobile technology to improve the lives of our passengers. The ability to read all types of chip will ease intermodal integration in the future because our devices are able to identify any type of electronic tickets that other transportation operators may develop later. KCJ will have one of the most advanced electronic ticketing systems in Asia Pacific. In addition to that, our system can also implement Mobile NFC e-Wallet both as ticket and as medium of exchange - Sony`s experience in other markets with similar expansion will greatly benefit KCJ.”

“We are very pleased to have come to agreement with KCJ - a leading transport operator in Indonesia. Using Sony’s FeliCa card and NFC mobile contactless experience, we will ensure that we can make a positive contribution to improve KCJ’s service for its rapidly expanding operations. From this first step with KCJ we will further expand the FeliCa business in the important Indonesian market.”
