From London to Tokyo - Amcor P-Plus® is a winner, reducing food waste in store and offering superior design

London, UK – WEBWIRE

On 12 November, Amcor P-Plus® won a Highly Commended award in the ‘Flexible Plastic Pack of the Year’ category at the prestigious UK Packaging Awards with its lidded tray pack designed for fresh strawberries.  Amcor Flexibles’ solution won the coveted award because of the significant shelf-life extension it brings to the fruit whilst maintaining excellent taste and quality.

Many varieties of strawberry exist, each with their specific respiration rate requiring specific film permeability.  Amcor Flexibles worked on carefully modifying the permeability of its lidding film using

P-Plus® micro-perforation technology and investigated shelf life extension across all varieties and throughout the entire season.  Working hand in hand with Berry World, one of the UK’s foremost soft fruit marketing companies, the solution was a pack that extends the shelf life of strawberries to at least four days from packing.   “Amcor’s rigour and the depth of testing were absolutely critical to success.  Thanks to the P-Plus® lidding film, our strawberries maintained their high level of quality and taste throughout the additional one day’s shelf-life and food waste was significantly reduced by up to 50% in store!” said Wickus Olivier, Supply Chain Manager, Berry World.

Tokyo – Meanwhile an attractive, reverse printed design printed by Amcor Flexibles on a P-Plus® pack won a Silver Award in the equally prestigious Tokyo Pentawards Food/Fruit and Vegetables category.  Amcor’s Belgian customer, Special Fruit, is a fruit, vegetable and herb importer and supplier throughout Europe.  Its BestChoice sugar snaps and mange tout packs were entered in the competition by their design agency ‘Quatre Mains’.  The twelve members of the jury loved the “fresh off the market” concept that shows the quality of the fresh produce in a handy pack” said Patrick Maes, Managing Director, Special Fruit.  The P-Plus® design perfectly translated what BestChoice stands for: quality, authenticity and health!
