EBSCO Discovery Service™ Helps Raise Level of Research Being Conducted for High School in New Jersey

EDS Helps Students to Be Lifelong Learners

IPSWICH, Mass. – WEBWIRE
"EDS has allowed us to create a seamless search experience, customized for our students.”

Princeton High School, a public high school in New Jersey, has selected EBSCO Discovery Service  (EDS) from EBSCO Information Services. The school chose EDS to improve discoverability of its library resources and to raise the level of the research being conducted by students.

According to Princeton High School Learning Commons Media Specialist, Jen Bigioni, they offered numerous proprietary resources to their students but many were never used. EDS has helped turned that around. “With EDS, students are able to do a single search and the best results, regardless of their source, are made available to them. We have already witnessed students using materials that were previously underutilized.”

Students at Princeton High School are encouraged to understand and implement advanced searches in order to develop their research skills. Bigioni credits EDS for supporting this goal. “At the high school level, one of our main objectives is to get students to be lifelong learners. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to teach students to do high level research. EDS helps us realize that goal and students have responded well.”

Feedback from students has been positive, specifically with regard to the features and functionality of EDS. “We find that we use field search and the subject, language and database facets the most,” said Bigioni. “We have an ELL population and a robust world language department that both benefit from the language facets. The whole school benefits from being able to narrow their results to the most relevant by using the other facets available. We also set aside four widgets, three of them because the sites’ interfaces held specific value under certain circumstances. We have enjoyed this flexibility from EDS”.

The Princeton High School Learning Commons team worked with EBSCO Support to customize the search box with facets and color and Bigioni has done further customizing “I was able to go into the code and further specialize the colors, some of the other aspects like width and font size and border width, and the text. EDS was also able to link to our proxy server. EDS has allowed us to create a seamless search experience, customized for our students.”

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of its relevance and value ranking technology.
