Sunnyvale Residents Learn of EPA Plans for Additional Vapor Intrusion Monitoring

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, the San Jose Mercury News published an article about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its plan to host a community meeting with residents of Sunnyvale, California. The meeting is to inform residents of the agency’s plans to test the indoor air quality (IAQ) of homes and schools in the area.

The article reported that the EPA has already been conducting air sampling in past years in some schools in Sunnyvale, but strengthened protective response recommendations for trichloroethene (TCE) have prompted plans to test more buildings.

TCE can enter buildings in areas with contaminated groundwater or soil through a process known as vapor intrusion. Exposure can cause a number of health issues for building occupants exposed to it in the air they breathe.  Acute and chronic inhalation exposure to trichloroethylene can affect the human central nervous system with symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, confusion, euphoria, facial numbness and weakness. Liver, kidney, immunological, endocrine and developmental effects have also been reported in humans.

There are many areas across California and the country that may have vapor intrusion issues. LA Testing, one of California’s leading providers of analytical services and sampling supplies, provides solutions to the public, government agencies, industry and environmental professionals.

“Due to improper storage and disposal of TCE in the past, it is now a common cause of vapor intrusion problems,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “Its vapors can be a health threat to anyone living, working or going to school in a building constructed above contaminated soil or water.  LA Testing offers vapor intrusion testing to help identify the presence of this and other dangerous chemicals so that corrective actions can be implemented.”

LA Testing has sponsored an educational video about the dangers associated with vapor intrusion that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TLCXmehOwE.
