San Diego Residents Reminded of Health & Safety Concerns after Asbestos Makes the News

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, San Diego’s CW Network affiliate published a report about a former asbestos removal trainer who pled guilty to charges of granting training certifications to students who did not attend required asbestos training courses or passing an essential examination.

When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed, asbestos fibers may be released into the air, which can then inhaled by people or settle as dust around the property. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Most products made today do not contain asbestos. Those few products made which still contain asbestos that could be inhaled are required to be labeled as such. However, until the 1970s, many types of building products and insulation materials used in homes contained asbestos.”

Workers involved with asbestos removal activities are required by law to be trained for this hazardous activity.  An untrained worker can pose a risk to not only their own health, but also to their coworkers’ health and even any future building occupants when asbestos is not properly handled.  Exposure to asbestos can result in lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.

“Asbestos removal is a regulated industry because the dangers associated with exposure are so great and can sometimes take many years to appear after exposure has taken place,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “At LA Testing, we offer sampling supplies and testing services for asbestos in bulk materials, dust and air samples.  These services are available to the public, industry and environmental professionals to protect people’s health and to ensure that regulations are properly followed when asbestos is present. This information is essential to have before any building maintenance, restoration, remodeling or demolition activities take place that may contain asbestos.”
