Morristown Medical Center, Leaders in Surgery, Get Newest Robot – da Vinci Xi

Morristown, NJ – WEBWIRE

Morristown Medical Center has paired the expertise of its award-winning, regionally-recognized surgical team with the most advanced robotic surgical system available, the da Vinci Xi.

The addition of this new, minimally-invasive robotic system will allow surgeons at Morristown Medical Center to operate robotically in a number of complex surgeries that would otherwise need to be performed through traditional, open surgery. This means that the advantages of robotic surgery - smaller incisions, less blood loss during surgery, fewer complications and shorter recovery periods – will now be available to more patients whose complex problems may have previously ruled out this approach.

Morristown Medical Center’s surgical team, which has established itself as a leader in robotic surgery is the first in northwestern New Jersey to use the new da Vinci Xi system. When the hospital first obtained an earlier da Vinci robot in 2005, it had also been the first hospital in northwestern New Jersey to treat patients with the system. Morristown Medical Center surgeons have performed more than 4,500 procedures using this state-of-the-art technology.

As a designated da Vinci Epicenter for urogynecologic surgery, a prestigious honor highlighting the hospital’s excellent robotic surgical outcomes, Morristown Medical Center trains medical residents and surgeons from other hospitals throughout the country in this practice. Morristown Medical Center’s residents also recently won the Gold Medal Overall in the first-ever Robotic Surgical Olympics, a regional contest in which hospitals from throughout New York and New Jersey compete in simulated robotic surgeries. The team also took first place in three of five different exercises in the contest.

“Bringing the da Vinci Xi to Morristown Medical Center puts the most advanced tool in the hands of some of the region’s most talented robotic surgeons,” said Ayal Kaynan, MD, director of minimally invasive and robotic surgery for Morristown Medical Center. “That combination is a major advantage for patients for whom more complex surgeries will now be handled in a minimally invasive fashion with greater ease.”

Robotic surgeons at Morristown Medical Center plan to use the new robotic system for numerous kinds of procedures, including hernia surgery, liver tumors, obesity, pancreatic tumors, kidney tumors, bladder cancer, diverticulitis, colorectal cancer, gynecologic cancers and more. The hospital’s two da Vinci Si models, which preceded the Xi model, will continue to be utilized with excellent outcomes.  This includes performance of “single site surgery”, which involves the use of one small port site during surgery.

Approved earlier this year by the FDA, Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Xi system has broader capabilities than prior generations of the da Vinci System. It can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries (procedures in which instruments must be able to reach up and down and across the abdomen or chest).

Compared to earlier da Vinci Systems, the da Vinci Xi System’s key features include:

  • A new overhead instrument arm architecture designed to facilitate anatomical access from virtually any position
  • A new endoscope digital architecture that creates a simpler, more compact design with improved visual definition and clarity
  • An ability to attach the endoscope to any arm, providing flexibility for visualizing the surgical site
  • Smaller, thinner arms with newly designed joints that offer a greater range of motion than ever before
  • Longer instrument shafts designed to give surgeons greater operative reach

In addition to these enhancements, the da Vinci Xi is compatible with Intuitive’ s Firefly Fluorescence Imaging Vision System.  Firefly provides real-time endoscopic near-infrared fluorescence imaging, similar to use of night vision goggles, which enables surgeons to use a special video camera and glowing dye to view blood flowing in vessels and tissue, or bile moving through ducts during minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Part of Atlantic Health System, Morristown Medical Center participates in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP).  It has been recognized as one of 37 ACS NSQIP-participating hospitals to achieve meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2012, and one of 25 hospitals in the United States to achieve exemplary outcomes for surgical patient care in 2009. The facility includes operating rooms and staff specially dedicated to the performance of robotic surgery, and multiple other complex minimally invasive and open surgeries.  Its health care team includes fellowship trained surgical specialists in virtually every discipline, including the largest staff of pediatric surgeons in NJ.  Morristown Medical Center is home to a state-of-the-art bioskills simulation laboratory for additional staff training, also accredited by the American College of Surgeons.  This program includes robotic simulation protocols developed at Morristown Medical Center and being recognized as the standard by other institutions in the credentialing process for surgeons performing robotic surgery.
