OpenPeak Issued 15 Patents in 2014 for Secure App Management on Mobile Devices

OpenPeak Inc., a leading enterprise mobility management solutions provider, announced today that it was awarded 15 key patents in 2014. The patents, which cover a wide range of management needs from secure app creation to policy compliance, extend the company’s U.S. and international patent portfolio to over 150 patents, placing OpenPeak firmly at the forefront of enterprise-level device and application governance.

OpenPeak’s latest patents cover fundamental concepts of app wrapping, compliance checking and app distribution. The most prominent include:

• System and Method for Creating Secure Applications

  (US Patent No. 8,695,060, http://www.freepatentsonline.com/8695060.pdf). Part of OpenPeak’s SECTOR® Network infrastructure, the patent covers OpenPeak’s app wrapping process that automatically turns a developer’s app into a secure and managed app that can be signed by the developer and distributed through public or third party app stores. The process, which modifies the app without accessing its source code, secures app data, restricts communication to other authorized apps, enables participation in a shared enterprise VPN, and enforces corporate policies as well as authentication and authorization requirements.

• System and Method for Ensuring Compliance with Organizational Policies

  (US Patent No. 8,713,173, http://www.freepatentsonline.com/8713173.pdf). This patent claims a process of monitoring a managed device for compliance with enterprise policies. In particular, should the device fall outside stated policies, such as through jailbreak or other tampering, corrective action can be taken, including remote locking or wiping of enterprise data on the device, which can be done without impacting a user’s personal content.

• Managed Services Platform and Method of Operation of Same

This patent focuses on a system and method of delivering bundles of content (e.g., apps, documents and/or settings) to specific classes of users. For example, an administrator may deploy VPN settings to all engineering employees and a specific collection of apps and documents to sales employees.

• Creating Distinct User Spaces Through User Identifiers

  (US Patent No. 8,856,959, http://www.freepatentsonline.com/8856959.pdf). This patent claims a unique solution for reserving ranges of user IDs in the operating system, for the purpose of isolating data and creating multiple workspaces on a device. This capability is increasingly important as tablets and smartphones are shared in the home, schools and industry. Moreover, this solution can be leveraged to enable a user to maintain personal and secure workspaces on such devices.

• Portable Computing Device and Method of Operation of Same

Directed to managed devices with multiple users, the patent covers a method for delivering a bundle of content for each user based on that user’s category. For example, a bundle delivered to a third grade student may have different prescribed apps, content and settings in comparison to that of a fourth grade student.

• System and Method for Validating Components During a Booting Process

This patent claims a secure booting process in which the various layers of software on a managed device are progressively scanned and validated, with progression to each successive layer contingent on the current layer being cleared. The process can ensure that all levels of a system are free from malware or other system contaminants.
