Lead Poisoning Risks and Shooting Ranges Come Under the Microscope

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

Recently, NBC News published a report about hidden dangers at shooting ranges. The article looked at lead poisoning risks to employees, law enforcement and the public who visit these locations. According to the article, a study in Alaska found that the largest source of lead exposure for 6 to 17 year olds was from shooting ranges.  It also discussed the case of 20 youths from an indoor shooting range in Washington that tested positive for lead poisoning in 2010.

In April, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published information about indoor firing ranges and elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) in people associated with these facilities.  The report also states that there are between 16,000 to 18,000 indoor firing ranges in the United States.

Exposure to lead may cause a range of health effects, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death. “Most people associate lead poisoning risks with exposure to lead-based paints in older homes and properties,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “The recent NBC News report and other media stories indicate that lead is a real issue in both indoor and outdoor shooting ranges. When bullets made of lead are touched or fired, they can expose people to lead particulates.  These particulates can be inhaled before they settle as dust. Whenever these dusts are disturbed or touched, they can cause exposure concerns in addition to the lead bullets and fragments that remain in the area.”

To help identify lead hazards, EMSL provides laboratory analysis and sampling supplies to environmental contractors, consultants, government regulators and the general public. Their network of laboratories across the United States and Canada can quickly and efficiently provide lead and other hazardous material testing services.
