"Severe sepsis is a common and deadly threat."

Atlanta, Georgia -- Atlanta legal nurse consultant Liz Buddenhagen attended an educational symposium presented by the Athens Classic City Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Georgia on November 12, 2014.

About the Symposium:

Dr. Nehal Bhatt of Athens Pulmonology and the medical director of the St. Mary’s Intensive Care Unit spoke first about recognizing and managing severe sepsis. Dr. Bhatt said “severe sepsis is a common and deadly threat.” He said that sepsis is the leading cause of death in the ICU except coronary disease with myocardial infarction (heart attack) being the number one cause of death in ICU.

Dr. Bhatt discussed the early signs of sepsis and the importance of treating the condition as early as possible. He updated the registered nurses on the current best practices to accomplish early intervention.

Dr. Alan Morgan, a neurology hospitalist at St. Mary’s Hospital, followed with a comprehensive talk about Guillain Barre Syndrome. Guillian Barre is a clinical syndrome of weakness with the loss of tendon reflexes progressing over one to three weeks. It can be confused with other neurological problems but the earlier it is diagnosed, generally, the better the outcome.

Dr. Clay Chappell, Interventional Cardiologist and Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab at St. Mary’s, wrapped up the morning with case studies of cardiac situations that resulting in cardiogenic shock and the therapies utilized to treat the shock. He also differentiated cardiogenic shock from septic shock.
