WXC Application Acceleration Platforms Reduce Expenses While Improving Network Performance

SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 28, 2006 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) today announced that BE&K, Inc., an award-winning engineering and construction company, is using its WXC application acceleration platforms to accelerate the performance of mission-critical collaborative software while lowering overhead costs and improving network reliability and security.

The Juniper Networks WXC platforms provide BE&K with secure and assured application delivery, accelerating a broad range of business applications by increasing available WAN capacity and improving the performance of inherently inefficient protocols. With the Juniper platforms, BE&K has realized an overall 3x increase in WAN capacity, which translates into much faster response times for users downloading large files over WAN links. For instance, a 20MB file transfer that took more than two minutes before the WXC platform deployment now takes less than 20 seconds - a more than six-fold performance improvement.

Based in Birmingham, Alabama, BE&K has installed WXC platforms at the headquarters facility as well as construction and engineering offices located in Houston, Richmond, Virginia; Newark, Delaware and Washington D.C. The Juniper Networks platforms enable employees to share large engineering drawings, vital spreadsheets and other files between offices while mitigating the performance-dampening effects of latency and limited bandwidth capacity. Layer 3 Communications, a Juniper Elite partner in Birmingham, played a key role in securing the Juniper platforms for the initial evaluation.

“The Juniper boxes didn’t just save us bandwidth, they accelerated all our traffic,” says Steve Melendez, BE&K’s network manager. “It was a much better end-user experience and our technical managers say that using large drawings remotely is as fast as when they access them locally.”
Improved Performance

Since the WXC platforms were installed, application performance over the WAN has improved across the board at BE&K. The platforms are making such efficient use of existing WAN bandwidth, they have enabled the company to centralize critical application servers to reduce overhead and maintenance costs, roll out new resource-intensive collaborative engineering applications, and avoid more than $45,000 in server upgrades.

The WXC platforms are based on a unique WX Framework, which defines several interdependent technologies designed to accelerate application performance, increase WAN capacity and enable traffic prioritization. The Molecular Sequence ReductionTM (MSRTM) compression technique benefits a broad cross-section of application types, helping businesses achieve up to a 10-fold increase in WAN bandwidth. BE&K also employs the WX Framework’s Network Sequence Caching technology, which dramatically speeds the transfer of large files like engineering drawings and presentations by eliminating repetitive data sequences.
Application Acceleration

BE&K is using the WX Framework’s Application Flow Acceleration (AppFlowTM) technology as a key enabler for the server centralization initiative.

The AppFlow technology speeds Microsoft Exchange, Windows file services and web-based applications whose performance over the WAN are negatively impacted by inherent inefficiencies of their underlying protocols - the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI), the Common Internet File System (CIFS) and HTTP. The AppFlow technology delivers a three- to 100-fold increase in WAN capacity.
