Digital Loeb Classical Library Debuts

New site on Safari platform extends iconic Greek and Latin library’s mission with advanced user-friendly features

Boston/MA/USA – WEBWIRE

BOSTON, Oct. 8, 2014 -- Safari has announced the successful launch of the digital Loeb Classical Library, which it developed with the Trustees of the Loeb Classical Library and Harvard University Press.

Using Safari’s award-winning PubFactory publishing platform and innovative team, the digital Loeb Classical Library captures the rich heritage and 520 volumes of Greek and Latin texts contained in its historic collections, while integrating the technologically advanced features needed by today’s scholars, students and readers.  The new site also effectively extends James Loeb’s 1911 founding mission, of making classical Greek and Latin literature with accurate English translations accessible to the broadest number of readers possible, only now they will be able to search, browse, read, bookmark, annotate and share content in an elegant interface, with ease and speed like never before.

“The Safari team was selected based on each developer’s commitment to high standards, proven success with online publishing platforms for scholarly texts and even personal backgrounds,” said Marc Moskowitz, senior data engineer, Safari.  “As an engineer with a Classics background, for example, I was excited to work on this project with the Trustees of the Loeb Classical Library and with Harvard University Press to make sure we were honoring and doing right by these ancient texts.  And of course we have.  In addition, because our platform is so flexible, we were able to design and develop several alternative reading interfaces specifically for Loeb’s iconic content, layout and more,” he said.

Key features include:

  • Single and dual-language reading modes
  • Intuitive search and browse
  • Sophisticated bookmarking and annotation features
  • Tools for sharing bookmarks and annotations
  • Greek keyboard
  • User account and My Loeb content saved in perpetuity
  • Inclusion of every Loeb volume in print
  • Regular uploading of new and revised volumes

“We at Harvard University Press are delighted to further James Loeb’s mission of making all that is important in Greek and Latin literature available to interested readers. This marks an important new chapter in the 103-year history of the Loeb Classical Library,” said Director of Harvard University Press William P. Sisler.
