Kemira supports the World Bank’s initiative of ”Putting a Price on Carbon”

WEBWIRE

Kemira has recently become a member of the Climate Leadership Council founded by Sitra, Caverion, Fortum, Kone, Neste Oil, Outotec and St1. The Climate Leadership Council announced on September 3 that it will join forces with Global Utmaning and Nordic Action Group in order to support the World Bank’s initiative of ”Putting a Price on Carbon”. The initiative demands a price on carbon emissions as the world faces scarse resources and changing climate.

The Climate Leadership Council challenges all Finnish companies to support the initiative before the Climate Summit held in New York on September 23. The initiative states the importance of putting price on carbon to help limit the increase in global mean temperature and to efficiently and cost effectively reduce emissions. Carbon pricing is a tool for companies to manage the risks and opportunities to their current operations and future profitability. The price on carbon is considered to be a key element in the fight against climate change and in driving structural transformation and innovation.

Kemira Carbon Index

Kemira is carefully following the public discussion on energy and climate policy development for anticipating the potential implications on our operations.

In 2013 Kemira defined the Kemira Carbon Index to monitor our CO2 performance from both consolidated and individual manufacturing site perspective. Based on our work to define the Kemira Energy Efficiency and Carbon Indices, the results from the E3 energy efficiency enhancement program, and considerations about stronger political pressure on reducing CO2 emissions, Kemira has decided to set a long-term target for CO2 emission intensity from our manufacturing operations. The target is to reduce the value of the Kemira Carbon Index to or below 80 by the end of 2020, in comparison to the Carbon Index value of 100 in baseline year 2012.
