Although these figures show that some progress is being made in reducing road accidents, the fact is that too many people are still suffering injuries from accidents on the road

A report recently released by the UK Department of Transport showed there were a total of 138, 660 personal injury road accidents reported to the police in 2013 –considerably less than in 2012. The study on the amount of causalities on our roads also showed a steady decrease year on year.

Nearly 140,000 people reported a personal injury sustained from road traffic accidents to the police, which is a 5 per cent drop from 2012. There was also a slight decrease in the number of road deaths too with fatality numbers having dropped by 2 per cent to 1,713 compared to that of 2012.

These figures took into account different types of road users, namely:

·         Pedestrians – 23%
·         Car Occupant – 46%
·         Motorcycle Users – 19%
·         Pedal Cyclists – 6%
·         Other (mainly goods vehicle, bus and coach occupants) – 5%

Fortunately fatalities are at almost 40 per cent below the 2005-09 average, when these numbers were reaching upwards of 3000. Even though the numbers of fatal road accidents are decreasing dramatically, an average of 5 deaths and 59 serious injuries occur on the road every day.

Commenting about the decrease in accidents, Emma Greenhalgh, Head of Road Traffic Accidents at Freeclaim Solicitors said, “Although these figures show that some progress is being made in reducing road accidents, the fact is that too many people are still suffering injuries from accidents on the road”
