WellCare Donates $50,000 To The Family Café To Support Floridians With Disabilities

TAMPA, Fla. – WEBWIRE

WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG) and its Staywell Health Plan continued their commitment to support people with disabilities by donating $50,000 to help Florida families attend the 16th Annual Family Café and Summit on Disabilities. This is the seventh year that the company has provided financial assistance to give people, who otherwise could not afford to attend, an opportunity to access the nation’s largest statewide conference on disabilities.

The Family Café exists to connect individuals with disabilities and their families with state agencies, advocacy groups, employers and other service providers, to promote networking and discussions about the services that are available, and how to access them. This year, more than 8,000 participants attended the event in Orlando, Fla.

“WellCare has a long history of serving Floridians with disabilities, and we have developed a strong understanding of their unique needs,” said Tracy Schmidt, WellCare vice president, field sales and marketing and The Family Café board member. “We are proud to continue our support of The Family Café and its work to connect people with the right services and resources to help them make the best possible decisions for themselves and their loved ones.”

“There are more than 3.5 million individuals with disabilities in Florida, and millions of family members and caregivers. We created The Annual Family Café to bring those people together so they could identify resources, connect with each other and learn about ways to have a better life in their communities,” said Lori Fahey, president and CEO of The Family Café. “The Annual Family Café is all about collaboration, advocacy, friendship and empowerment, and we are very grateful to WellCare for supporting our vision.”

In addition to the company’s sponsorship, WellCare collected more than $10,000 in donations to purchase breakfast for the summit attendees. Approximately 80 WellCare employees, family members and friends volunteered during the event to provide registration, face painting, free popcorn and other support.

As of March 31, 2014, WellCare serves approximately 400,000 Medicaid plan members, 82,000 Florida Healthy Kids members, 84,000 Medicare Advantage plan members and 57,000 Medicare Prescription Drug Plan members in Florida.

About The Family Café, Inc.
The Family Café began in 1998 as an attempt to respond to a specific need in the disability community: the need for information. In response, we at the Family Café created an Annual Conference to serve as a clearinghouse of information. The conference provides a unique environment, where families could connect with peers, commercial service providers, and public entities to find out what services were available to them, which best met their needs, and how to go about securing those services.
