Today, most contractors know that exposure to high levels of mold can cause allergies and even trigger asthma in some people.  Far few fewer have ever heard of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, also known as HP.  The condition is a type of lung inflammation that occurs in people who develop immune system sensitization to inhaled organic dust and it has been associated with exposure to mold.
 
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HP has been documented in workers in buildings with mold and bacteria contaminated air-conditioners as well as contaminated ductwork and filters. This lung disease can also occurred in people who work or spend time in water-damaged buildings with roof leaks, plumbing leaks, poorly draining condensation pans and high indoor relative humidity that has resulted in microbial growth. 
 
HP may develop following either short or long-term exposure to indoor mold.  Some people develop shortness of breath, cough, muscle aches, chills, fever, night sweats and profound fatigue. These symptoms usually first appear hours after exposure and may last for 1 to 3 days. Other affected people may have progressive shortness of breath and cough, as well as weight loss.
