Marine commander recalls key Vietnam War battle in YouTube video
BGEN Bill Weise is subject of new biography, "One Magnificent Bastard."
RH Rositzke & Associates, publisher of “One Magnificent Bastard,” has produced a YouTube video featuring an interview with BGEN Bill Weise, USMC (Ret.), subject of the book, and Mark Huffman, the book’s author. View the video here.
The interview was conducted by Col. Walt Ford, USMC (Ret.), editor of Leatherneck magazine and recorded in Leatherneck’s studio at Quantico, Va.
In the interview, Weise, known by many as “Wild Bill,” addresses questions about the fierce battle of Dai Do, which took place in northern South Vietnam over three days in late April and early May 1968. In the battle, then-Lt. Col. Weise commanded the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, known as “The Magnificent Bastards.”
Despite being vastly outnumbered by a North Vietnamese division seeking to overrun the sprawling Marine supply base at Dong Ha, Weise’s undermanned battalion turned back the assault, taking heavy casualties in the process.
“One Magnificent Bastard” is the story of Weise’s life, from growing up on the streets of South Philadelphia, through his illustrious Marine Corps career, to his active retirement years, when he was a driving force behind establishment of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
The book is on sale at The Marine Shop, in Quantico, and through Amazon.com. “The Battle of Dai Do,” a video documentary about the famous Vietnam War engagement, is also available in DVD format on Amazon.
