In the U.S., many people think asbestos has been permanently banned, but that is not exactly the case.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution to establish the 10th Annual National Asbestos Awareness Week.  It begins on April 1st and is meant to raise public awareness of asbestos hazards and diseases related to exposure to the material.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Currently about 125 million people in the world are exposed to asbestos at the workplace. In 2004, asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis from occupational exposures resulted in 107,000 deaths and 1,523,000 Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). In addition, several thousands of deaths can be attributed to other asbestos-related diseases, as well as to nonoccupational exposures to asbestos.”

Three of the major health effects associated with asbestos exposure include: lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.  The primary route of exposure to asbestos is through the inhalation of airborne fibers.

Asbestos was incorporated in many products in the past and continues to be used in some products around the world even today.  “In the U.S., many people think asbestos has been permanently banned, but that is not exactly the case,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “In 1989, the EPA issued a final rule under Section 6 of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) banning most asbestos-containing products in the United States. However, in 1991 that rule was vacated and remanded by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. As a result, most of the original ban on the manufacture, importation, processing or distribution in commerce for most of the asbestos-containing product categories originally covered in the 1989 final rule was overturned.  Only the bans on corrugated paper, rollboard, commercial paper, specialty paper and flooring felt, and any new uses of asbestos remain banned under the 1989 rule.  Some additional bans have been implemented under the Clean Air Act (CAA) and under the Consumer Product Safety Act, but even these do not eliminate the use of asbestos from many materials.”

Although it is no longer used in many products, asbestos is still commonly found all across the Caribbean in older buildings. Zimmetry Environmental provides asbestos testing and consulting services across the region to help identify its presence and prevent human exposure.
