Los Angeles Kings Score Hat-Trick with Fujifilm Dternity

Professional ice hockey team entrusts their greatest moments to Dternity deep storage solution

Valhalla – WEBWIRE

VALHALLA, N.Y., March 19, 2014FUJIFILM Recording Media U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of FUJIFILM Corporation, the leading global manufacturer of data storage media, today shared with the data storage community a case study of how the Los Angeles Kings are using Dternity to meet the team’s vast video storage needs and adapt to an evolving set of business demands.

Dternity is Fujifilm’s deep storage and archiving solution for organizations seeking to preserve and protect their critical data. Combining cost-effective data tape with seamless onsite and online content protection, Dternity’s holistic approach to archiving is easy to use, reliable and scalable for future data growth.

As Aaron Brenner, Director of Production for the LA Kings, began evaluating the team’s data storage needs, he became impressed with the simplicity and scalability of Dternity. Since Brenner and his team’s expertise are in video production, and not information technology, they were attracted to the ease of configuration and management of Dternity.

“Dternity was easy to digest and the concept was simple, even for a production-focused group with no formal IT training,” said Aaron Brenner, Director of Production for the LA Kings. “The learning curve for our non-technical staff was very short. In fact, we set it up on a Friday and by Monday we were up and running.”

“The Los Angeles Kings are no strangers to winning, and we understand that video of every minute played is not only critical, but must be easily stored and retrieved. That is why we are thrilled they have chosen Dternity as the solution to their archiving needs,” said Peter Faulhaber, president, FUJIFILM Recording Media U.S.A., Inc. “Dternity is the complete deep storage solution, providing simple and cost-effective archiving for organizations that generate large amounts of data.”

According to Brenner, the franchise was not generating or storing a vast amount video until recently. During the entire 2007/2008 season, the LA Kings produced approximately 100GB of data. However, over the last several years, the LA Kings began producing video and other content at a rapid pace. During the 2011/2012 season, when the LA Kings won the Stanley Cup, they generated approximately 7TB of data per week. Today, the team stores almost 32-35TB of new data per season.

Since its initial deployment, Dternity has delivered a number of significant positive results for the LA Kings organization, including:

  • Greater peace-of-mind: The team’s data is fully protected within Dternity Media Cloud;
  • Ease-of-use: The team required only 15 minutes of training before the device was set up and serving data;
  • Significant cost reduction: CAPEX is reduced by leveraging the more cost-effective, tape based solution, while OPEX is driven down by simplifying ongoing storage management;
  • Scalability: Dternity delivers cost-effective scalability as data volumes continue to increase.
