EMSL Analytical, Inc. Certified in Friction Material Program by NSF International
EMSL Analytical, Inc.’s corporate laboratory has been assessed and approved by NSF International’s Friction Material Program (FMP-LAB). As the second testing laboratory to earn NSF’s approval, EMSL has also demonstrated its commitment to quality by meeting the program’s strict requirements, including maintaining ISO 17025 accreditation and passing annual audits to verify ongoing compliance to friction material testing standard SAE J2975.
As of 2014, states now require that an approved third-party lab tests the levels of asbestos and chemical constituents in friction materials. EMSL offers services that are in accordance with the new friction material requirements to the industries’ use of asbestos, copper, chromium, mercury and other heavy metals standard to California and Washington. Without testing and registration, brake pads cannot legally be sold in those regulated markets.
The level that each friction material has to achieve includes:
- Level A: Limits levels of asbestos, cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury
- Level B: Includes all the requirements of Level A and copper levels must be less than 5% by weight
- Level N: Includes all the requirements of Level A and copper levels must be less than 0.5% by weight
