Asbestos Discovery at Statistical Institute of Jamaica has Employees Concerned

Zimmetry Environmental provides testing and consulting services to identify asbestos hazards in buildings across the Caribbean.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico – WEBWIRE

Asbestos-related diseases and cancers may not appear until years or even decades after exposure.

Late last month, The Gleaner published a report that testing done at the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) has found trace amounts of asbestos near an air intake in the building.  The discovery was made after an employee developed respiratory issues.  According to the article, these developments come after other employees were already on edge following multiple cancer-related deaths associated with former employees.

Exposure to asbestos fibers is universally recognized as a health hazard and its use is highly regulated in the United States by both OSHA and the EPA. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber that has been used in many building products and materials in the past due to its strength, insulating properties, and heat resistance.

Three of the major health effects associated with asbestos exposure includes:

  • lung cancer
  • mesothelioma
  • asbestosis

“In indoor environments, asbestos fibers may be released into the air by the deterioration or disturbance of asbestos-containing materials, demolition work, and building maintenance, repair, and remodeling activities,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “Asbestos can be found all across the Caribbean, including on our home island of Puerto Rico.  Asbestos-related diseases and cancers may not appear until years or even decades after exposure and it is not possible to determine if a material contains asbestos with just the naked eye.  At Zimmetry, our environmental professionals provide asbestos testing and consulting services all across the region to help prevent human exposure to these deadly fibers.  We provide full compliance with all local asbestos regulations to not only protect people’s health, but to also prevent costly non-compliance violations.”
