Fujifilm Provides Medical Equipment to Kenya Hospital Improving Access to Important Cancer Screening Tests

WEBWIRE

Wayne, N.J., February 19, 2014 – As part of its humanitarian outreach efforts, the Endoscopy Division of FUJIFILM Medical Systems U.S.A., Inc. has announced the donation of endoscopy equipment including video processors, monitors, colonoscopes, gastroscopes and other essential accessories to Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya. Since 2008, Fujifilm has been providing high-quality equipment to qualified nonprofit organizations worldwide.

“Through our relationship with Tenwek Hospital, Fujifilm is bringing advanced technology to patients and institutions that would otherwise have no access to this equipment due to social conditions and lack of funds,” said Kurt Cannon, Vice President of Sales, Marketing, Operations and Support Services, Endoscopy Division, FUJIFILM Medical Systems U.S.A., Inc.

Tenwek Hospital, located in Bomet, Kenya is a 300-bed hospital and training center that provides healthcare to a large and impoverished population with an especially high rate of esophageal cancer. The hospital is the surgical referral site for over four million people and is the only hospital in Western Kenya that has a special program for the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal cancer. Endoscopes are often requested by hospitals in developing countries because they are versatile, portable and can be used for a variety of diagnostic purposes.

The project, a collaborative effort representing teams from Tenwek Hospital, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Mayo Clinic, underscores how the commitment and expertise of many can lead to progress in treating a difficult and challenging disease, according to Dr. David Fleischer, gastroenterologist from Mayo Clinic in Arizona, who worked with the teams at Tenwek to treat patients.

“The generous donation from Fujifilm’s Endoscopy Division makes an enormous impact to advance health care and improve conditions in Kenya,” said Dr. Stephen Burgert, Director of Endoscopy Services, Tenwek Hospital. "The donations will greatly enhance the capabilities of our doctors, which will directly impact countless lives.”
