Last month, the Whittier Daily News reported that a renovation project at the La Habra Heights City Hall has had to be changed after more asbestos was found on the building’s roof.  According to the article, asbestos had already been found in some parts of the building, but the latest discovery was found in a fabric membrane on the roof that had not previously been tested.

For many years, asbestos was added to a number of common building materials to increase their strength and durability and to provide some insulating and fireproofing properties.  The discovery of asbestos in the roof of an older building is not uncommon.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), some of the many materials that may contain asbestos in older structures include:

  • Attic and wall insulation containing vermiculite
  • Vinyl floor tiles and the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives
  • Roofing and siding shingles
  • Textured paint and patching compounds used on wall and ceilings
  • Walls and floors around wood-burning stoves protected with asbestos paper, millboard or cement sheets
  • Hot water and steam pipes coated with asbestos material or covered with an asbestos blanket or tape
  • Oil and coal furnaces and door gaskets with asbestos insulation
  • Heat-resistant fabrics

“When asbestos containing materials are disturbed, as in this renovation project, or becomes friable with age, the asbestos may become airborne and create a health threat for those in the area,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.     “Eventually, these asbestos fibers will settle and may contribute to dusts found in and around a building. LA Testing offers all of the testing supplies and comprehensive asbestos analysis to help determine if there is asbestos in air, water, soil, dust and bulk samples so that the proper safety precautions and regulations can be followed.”
