NEW YORK CITY - Urban Green Council, the New York City chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), has elected John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Building & Industrial Systems, as chairman of its board of directors. Mandyck, who previously served as co-vice chair, will assume his new role immediately. UTC Building & Industrial Systems is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX), a leading provider to the aerospace and building systems industries worldwide.

“We’re absolutely thrilled for John to take the leadership reins of the board,” said Russell Unger, executive director, Urban Green Council. “John has been a green building leader since the earliest days of the movement, and is greatly respected by the rest of his fellow directors, the Urban Green staff and broader green building community. We look forward to being challenged by his strategic thinking and international perspective.”

The mission of Urban Green Council is to advance the sustainability of urban buildings through education, advocacy and research. In 2013, Urban Green’s educational events reached more than 3,000 people, earning more than 2,500 hours of continuing education credits. Urban Green also works closely with New York City and industry leaders to propose recommendations to strengthen green building. By 2030, it’s estimated these measures will have reduced citywide carbon emissions by nearly 5 percent and lowered annual water consumption by the equivalent of 30 billion gallons.

Mandyck’s appointment is an extension of his current work with organizations and universities around the world to accelerate green building. Mandyck chairs the Corporate Advisory Board of the World Green Building Council, serves as an advisor to the China Green Building Council and was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Energy to co-chair the Department of Energy’s Appliance Standards and Rulemaking Federal Advisory Committee. He also presents energy efficiency and sustainability strategies in emerging markets through the Distinguished Sustainability Lecture Series, created and sponsored by United Technologies’ market-leading brands Carrier and Otis.

“Urban Green is making a tremendous difference in transforming the New York City built environment so that it is more balanced with the natural environment,” said Mandyck. “With accelerating momentum, broad support and an energetic staff, Urban Green is poised for even greater success.”
