Freeclaim Solicitors have reminded UK workers of their rights to make a work injury claim if employers fail to ensure their safety. This comes after the HSE warned employers of the consequences when employee health is put at risk.

Newly released figures show that, in 2012-13, no less than 15 people lost their lives in workplace accidents in the North West alone, while a further 2,337 suffered major injuries. The numbers are actually an improvement on the previous year, in which 25 workers lost their lives and 2,682 were seriously injured.

Safety records had also improved across the rest of the UK, as 148 people died in accidents at work compared to 171 the previous year. But while 10% fewer workers had reason to make a serious injury claim, the figure that could still amounted to 20,600.

Industries responsible for the most workplace accidents included the construction industry, which was responsible for 39 accidental deaths. The agricultural industry was responsible for 29 accidental deaths and manufacturing industry another 20.

The message from Alastair Fernie, Director and Solicitor at Freeclaim is that workplace accident claims do not simply benefit the victim of the accident or their families; they also protect other workers from suffering a similar fate.

He commented, “Often, when a UK worker makes a work accident claim, their employers take steps to ensure that the same accident does not happen again. This includes introducing new safety measures, introducing new personnel or changing business practices. In doing so, they prevent other employees from suffering harm in the future.

“For this reason, a workplace accident claim is not only important to the claimant but also for everybody else who works for the offending company in the future.

“This, however, should not overshadow the fact that every worker is entitled to compensation if their employer fails to protect their safety to a reasonable level. This compensation will be absolutely crucial in funding the necessary medical treatments and ongoing care required, to ensure that the victims of workplace negligence can continue to lead as normal a life as possible.

If the accident is fatal, compensation will be essential to safeguarding their family’s future as well as compensating their loss and grief.

Freeclaim have a team of specialist work accident compensation solicitors ready to win injured workers the compensation they deserve. They also have years of experience in claiming compensation for the families of workers who lost their lives at work.
