Many industrial hygiene professionals have made 2014 the year that they plan to take their careers to the next level.  For those planning to pursue the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification, an important date is just a short time away.  Applicants for the CIH program must submit their completed applications by February 1st in order to be eligible to take the spring examination.

“The testing window for the spring exam for successful Applicants of the February 1st deadline is April and May,” said Roger Smith, CIH, Certification Applications Manager at the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.  “For approved Candidates, we encourage them to sign up for their exam slots early.  Prometric Testing Centers continues to offer the exam, but slots fill up fast, especially towards the end of the testing window. It is a good idea to pay the exam fee as soon as your application has been approved so that Candidates have more choices and flexibility with their exam appointments.”

In addition to submitting a completed application form, those applying are reminded to also have the following forms and documents successfully submitted by the February 1st deadline:

  • College or University Degree Transcripts
  • IH Related Course Documentation
  • Work Experience Documentation
  • Professional Reference Questionnaires

Each year, there are two periods to take the CIH examination.  In addition to the spring exam, there is a fall exam. It has an August 1st application deadline and the exam period is from October through November.

The entire process detailing the CIH program and all of its requirements have been clearly defined by the ABIH in a downloadable document.  The Candidate Handbook discusses everything from academic and experience requirements to the application process, fees and examination information.
