Autism and Online Dating

For those with autism, social interactions can be the most nerve wracking of all experiences. What is perceived as a social norm by most people often goes right over the head of those on the spectrum. Even that term, right over the head, could be taken literally and temporarily derail a conversation. Indeed, many on the spectrum have a hard time picking up on idioms, expressions, and sarcasm unless it’s saying they have learned and become accustomed to hearing, and meeting new people can be hard.

A recent article from the Atlantic examines the benefits and perils of those with autism in the world of online dating. Where a bar or even a library would require a face to face interaction with someone, online dating allows the freedom to get acquainted with someone new with just a fraction of the intensity that can come with a face to face meeting. The article does not shy away from the difficulties even online dating can bring. In fact, even a mention of being on the autism spectrum can bring about stigma issues.

Another article from Autism Daily Newscast presents a perhaps more positive picture of online dating and autism. The article offers three dating sites for those on the spectrum and presents these as a better option than bars because of the relatively safe and structures environment. Regardless, it’s great to know there are tailored options out there for those with autism to experience dating and all the good and bad that can come from this type of relationship.
