Unisys document-processing solutions help lay foundation for check truncation

Beijing, August 10, 2006 – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that the Tianjin Payment Document Clearing and Settlement Center (Center) of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) signed a contract to acquire and deploy the Unisys check processing system.

The project includes Unisys Network Document Processor (NDP) solutions with a built-in digital signature function that represents the first application of its kind in China, laying the foundation for secured image exchange and check truncation capabilities.

The Center intends the solutions to replace its legacy check clearing system, and plans to integrate new technology with a range of existing applications.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Tianjin Branch Payment Document Clearing and Settlement Center will deploy multiple Unisys high-speed NDP1150 and tabletop Source NDP document processing systems, along with application software. The new configurations will support its regional check processing operation in Tianjin as well as check transfer processing for the Beijing and Langfang operations of PBOC.

The NDP1150 can be upgraded easily and the deployment at the Tianjin Branch Settlement Center can be flexibly scaled to meet the Center’s future growth requirements.

A contract signing ceremony was held in Tianjin and officiated by Madam Lu Fen, director of PBOC Tianjin Payment Document Clearing and Settlement Center, and Mr. David Wu, partner and general manager of Global Financial Services for Unisys in China.

“Our Center is a pioneer in adopting state-of-the-art technologies to improve our efficiencies. We have been examining the clearing systems of a few domestic and overseas banks. We also have compared the offerings of a couple of leading vendors and are convinced that the NDP series and comprehensive check processing system from Unisys is the best appropriate solution of choice for building our next-generation capabilities in this area,” said Madam Lu.

“Unisys is pleased that the Tianjin Payment Document Clearing and Settlement Center of PBOC has selected us for this important assignment. The Unisys NDP family offers unrivalled functionality, performance, compatibility, robustness and scalability. Unisys believes that this project with PBOC will be an excellent showcase for how the local banking sector can leverage best-in-class technologies to raise the bar for operational efficiencies,” said Mr. Wu of Unisys.
