Seventeen Magazine Offers Teens the Chance to Win a Green AMD Athlon 64 Processor-Based Notebook

SUNNYVALE, CA -- March 16, 2005 -- Modding PCs with Different Colors Hits Mainstream Consumers - It’s Not Just for Gamers Anymore.

Keeping in line with St. Patrick’s Day’s lucky green color scheme, this week Seventeen Magazine is giving away a modded AMD processor-based Averatec notebook in its monthly sweepstakes offering. The custom-painted green notebook is profiled in Seventeen’s Freebies sweepstakes found in the print and online March issue, reaching more than 2.9 million teenagers. The lucky winner of the Mobile AMD Athlon(TM) 64 processor-based Averatec notebook will be selected Sunday, March 20. Entries for the Irish-inspired notebook will be accepted for 24 hours on March 19 on Seventeen’s Web site at

“Today, more consumers -- especially teenagers, are tailoring their PCs to fit their lifestyle, making the item reflect their personality and style,” says Patrick Moorhead, Vice President, Global Marketing, Microprocessor Business Unit, Computation Products Group, AMD (NYSE:AMD). “AMD64 technology enables consumers to have the ultimate mobile technology experience, providing 64-bit computing capabilities, wireless compatibility and enhanced security within whatever color notebook they desire.”

The color selected for the Averatec notebook is British Racing Green. The modding was done by Smooth Creations, an Oregon-based auto and computer hardware paint design firm. The color green was selected by Seventeen Magazine due to the color’s popularity this season and the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

Averatec partnered with AMD to give away the Averatec 6240, which is equipped with a Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processor 3000+, a high-performance processor offering simultaneous 32-bit and 64-bit computing capabilities. The AV6240 Averatec notebook combines standalone DVD player functionality with a fully equipped multimedia notebook. The notebook’s standalone player is designed to allow users to watch up to three 90-minute DVD movies, or listen up to 7+ hours of audio CDs or MP3 files, without powering on the notebook’s operating system.

The Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processor provides users with energy-efficient AMD PowerNow!(TM) technology. This technology is designed to extend battery life and conserve processing power, keeping the system quiet while running power-intensive applications. Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processors also provide Enhanced Virus Protection, a built-in security feature that is enabled by Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Service Pack 2, to help protect the computer from certain malicious viruses found on the Internet today.

Originally, computer modding became a trend among gaming and computer enthusiasts in the late nineties. Modding involves altering technology components within the PC to increase performance and/or change the exterior appearance of the PC with lights, windows, tattoos and different colors. Though, according to PC Upgrade Magazine and PC Modding for Dummies, the trend has shifted to a mainstream audience.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with AMD on a truly creative concept that promotes our technology in a unique format,” says Averatec President, Saeed Shahbazi. “AMD64 technology continues to provide our 6240 notebook with the edge it needs for consumers living a mobile lifestyle.”

The name of the winner of the contest will be posted online on Seventeen Magazine’s Web site this Monday, March 21 at 10 a.m. EST.
