“If I had to pick only one thing to improve confidence in speaking,” said presentation coach Diane Windingland,  “it would be this:  speak with passion. If you are passionate about something, people are much more forgiving of your imperfections.  And, frankly, you probably will care less about being perfect.”

The Kindle version of Windingland’s most recent book, 12 Ways to Be a Confident Speaker is available free on Amazon until November 16.

“The number two way to be a more confident speaker,” said Windingland, “is to focus on your audience.  Instead of having a self-centered focus (”What if I blank out?“ or ”What if they think I’m boring?“), have an other-centered focus (”What if I can get them to think in a new way?“ or ”What if I can give them hope").

Throughout the book, Windingland encourages speakers to practice their speeches in effective ways, such as working on eye contact by putting up pictures of faces to look at when practicing.

“You might be competent in your work, but if you don’t speak with confidence, you are limiting your possibilities… for promotions and for influence,” said Windingland.
