Comcast and NBCUniversal Meet Commitment to Hire 2,000 Veterans Two Years Ahead of Schedule as Part of U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s "Hiring Our Heroes" Initiative

PHILADELPHIA, PA and WASHINGTON, DC - Comcast Corporation today announced that Comcast and NBCUniversal have hired 2,000 veterans since January 2012, achieving the company’s veteran hiring commitment almost two years ahead of schedule as part of its ongoing partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative.

“Hiring Our Heroes,” which launched in March 2011, is a nationwide effort to help veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses find meaningful employment. Comcast’s commitment is part of the National Chamber Foundation and Capital One’s Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign, the largest private sector commitment of its kind with over 1,200 businesses of all sizes involved, including Comcast and NBCUniversal which has supported the program since its inception.

“Comcast and NBCUniversal are very proud to have reached our commitment to hiring 2,000 veterans well ahead of schedule,” said William Strahan, Executive Vice President of Human Resources for Comcast Cable. “Our company continues to invest time, energy and resources to build a sustainable program that aims to attract, hire and foster a culture of support for the active duty military community, reservists and veterans we have working company-wide and for those who will join our team in the future.”

“Comcast and NBCUniversal have been instrumental in changing the national conversation on the value of hiring veterans and military spouses,” said Eric Eversole, executive director of Hiring Our Heroes. “Their public commitment toward our Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign has inspired other employers to follow suit. We are thrilled to hear Comcast and NBCUniversal met their aggressive hiring goal ahead of schedule and look forward to our continued work together.”

In 2012, Comcast and NBCUniversal were honored with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s 2nd Annual “Hiring Our Heroes” Lee Anderson Award for dedication to addressing the challenges faced by veterans, transitioning service members and military families in their search for meaningful employment. This year, Val Nicholas, Vice President, NBC News has been selected as a finalist to receive the2nd Annual “Hiring Our Heroes” Colonel Michael Endres Leadership Award, a recognition bestowed on an individual who has gone above and beyond to make a difference in employment opportunities for veterans, transitioning service members and spouses. A proud U.S. Army veteran, Nicholas has been nominated because of his personal commitment to raising awareness of veterans hiring through NBC News portals and public service announcements, as well as his support in promoting tools to assist transitioning vets, such as the recently launched “Next Steps for Vets” online resource.

Announced earlier this week “Next Steps for Vets,” is a web portal supported by NBCUniversal and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation that features tools and resources to help veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses with employment and education opportunities. The portal, hosted by NBCNews.com, serves as a nationwide network that equips veterans with essential tools and information to help them in their transition after returning home from military service.

Comcast and NBCUniversal seek to employ, support and promote veterans in the workforce, and since January 2012 have hired thousands veterans to work in a variety of positions at all levels, including network engineering, technology, operations, theme parks and resorts, programming, customer service, marketing, human resources, and other careers. To ensure veterans have access to the wide array of opportunities at Comcast and NBCUniversal, the companies have conducted targeted outreach to the military and veteran communities through on-base workshops and career fairs for military personnel, as well as by posting career opportunities on veteran-focused sites and attending traditional and virtual job fairs for the veteran and military community.

In celebration of Veterans Appreciation Week, Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand will salute our veterans by featuring military and veterans content on TV and online at www.Xfinity.com/TV through November 11. Additionally, the “Hire a Veteran On Demand” initiative will continue to be available to veterans seeking job opportunities with Comcast and other employers, and interviews focused on veterans resources and support services will be broadcast on Comcast Newsmakers through the end of the month as well as available for viewing on Xfinity On Demand or www.ComcastNewsmakers.com.
