Asbestos Professionals Have New Choices when it comes to Insurance

In late September, a junior high school in Rhode Island was closed for several days so that abatement professionals could safely remove asbestos from the building.  The asbestos was discovered when a ceiling that was being taken down during renovation activities revealed a second concealed ceiling.  The hidden ceiling contained the asbestos.

Cases like this happen every day across the country.  Due to the strength, insulating properties and heat resistance of asbestos fibers, the material was used in the past in a wide range of common construction materials. As the Rhode Island school demonstrates, asbestos containing materials may be out of sight, but if their fibers become airborne they can present a health hazard to anyone in the building.

Asbestos can not only be a health hazard to building occupants in older properties, but in many occupations workers can be exposed to asbestos fibers.  Exposure can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Fortunately, there are indoor air quality (IAQ) consultants who inspect and test for asbestos and abatement contractors who are trained to safely remove it from indoor environments.  In the past, these professionals often faced challenges and high costs when it came to obtaining insurance to be able to offer these critical services.  That all changed when MBM Insurance Resource Center began offering insurance coverage for asbestos consultants and contractors.

“Companies that work to protect the public from the hazards associated with exposure to asbestos need special insurance coverage that protects their interests and is affordable,” reported Marybeth Mainelli, President of MBM Insurance Resource Center.  “We offer these companies new choices that provide comprehensive coverage while saving them money.”
