October 20th through the 26th is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. The theme for this year, “Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future" underscores the importance of the many ways parents can reduce a child’s exposure to lead and prevent its serious health effects. The annual event is not just recognized in the United States, but also across the globe. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also promoting awareness of this important issue.

According to WHO, “Lead poisoning is entirely preventable, yet childhood lead exposure is estimated to contribute to about 600,000 new cases of intellectual disabilities every year. Even though there is wide recognition of this problem and many countries have taken action, exposure to lead, particularly in childhood, remains of key concern to health-care providers and public health officials worldwide.”

In the United States, the CDC, EPA and HUD have developed posters, web banners and other materials to help support awareness of lead poisoning. The agencies are encouraging people to not only get their children tested, but to also get their homes tested.

Supporting the efforts of all of these agencies is EMSL Analytical, Inc. EMSL is one of North America’s leading lead testing laboratories. The company provides environmental testing services so that people can test their homes for lead from lead-based paints and other materials.

“If you live in a home that was built before 1978, there is a good chance it has lead-based paint,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead paint is still present in millions of homes, often under layers of newer paint. If the paint begins to deteriorate, as often happens over time and in areas that get a lot of wear and tear, it can be a real hazard. This is especially true if children live in the property.  In addition to testing services, EMSL also provides field test kits that provide rapid results.”

EMSL has sponsored an educational video about lead hazards in the home that can be seen at:
