American Express Pledges $2 Million to Protect America’s Most Endangered Places

NEW YORK -- Today, American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced a new partnership to help promote and enable the preservation of endangered cultural and historic places across the United States. As the presenting partner of National Treasures, American Express will provide the National Trust with a $2 million grant to help to protect the nation’s architectural, cultural and natural heritage sites at risk of destruction or irreparable damage and ensure that these icons of the past remain present with us in the future. This grant is part of a $15 million commitment American Express made as a partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation over a 10-year period.

The grant funding will go to overall support of the National Treasures around the United States, as well as funding for specific preservation needs at some of the locations.

“The rich and diverse history of this country has produced many treasures, from beloved cultural landmarks to inspiring national masterpieces,” said Timothy J. McClimon, president of American Express Foundation. “American Express is taking action to protect these endangered places and celebrate their history and significance, so they may be experienced for years to come.”

“We are pleased to once again partner with American Express to help save our nation’s historic places,” said Stephanie Meeks, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “Their support of the National Treasures program will have a lasting impact across the country and demonstrates that the company’s long-standing commitment to historic preservation is as strong as ever.”

The National Treasures program is a revolving portfolio of endangered places representing a diverse range of historic sites with a variety of preservation issues and threats, including The Astrodome in Houston, Texas, Joe Frazier’s Gym in Philadelphia, Pa., Miami Marine Stadium in Miami, Fla., Union Station in Washington, D.C.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has identified an initial group of 37 historic places of the thousands of irreplaceable buildings, landscapes, and communities facing threats with national preservation implications. To view a complete list of current National Treasures, please visit www.SavingPlaces.org. The National Trust uses specific criteria to select each National Treasure, including their national historic significance, demonstration of community support, and evidence of a sustainable preservation plan.

American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation continue the spirit of their community-based preservation initiative, Partners in Preservation, by raising awareness of America’s endangered places through the National Treasures program.

Over the past eight years, American Express has made grants worth $13 million through Partners in Preservation, helping historic places in eight cities, including San Francisco, Chicago, New Orleans, Boston, Seattle, Saint Paul/Minneapolis, New York City and Washington, D.C., and has engaged millions of people. American Express is deeply committed to historic preservation, providing more than $50 million in grants to preserve historic places globally.
