Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released Antibiotic resistance threats in the United States, 2013.  The report gives a first-ever snapshot of the burden and threats posed by antibiotic-resistant germs having the most impact on human health.

The CDC states, “Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections. Many more people die from other conditions that were complicated by an antibiotic-resistant infection.”

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem and one of the most serious health threats facing the nation. Infections from drug-resistant bacteria are becoming quite common and some pathogens are now even resistant to multiple types of antibiotics.  Dr. Tom Freiden, MD, MPH, Director of the CDC, writes in the report’s forward that efforts to prevent such threats build on the foundation of proven public health strategies.  He lists infection control as a key element.

A crucial component of infection control in healthcare environments involves surface disinfection to prevent healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs).  Over the past several years, a number of the nation’s leading healthcare institutions have turned to UltraViolet Devices’ (UVDI) V-360+ UV Room Sanitizer for its optimal UV disinfection technology to quickly and thoroughly sanitize surfaces.

UVDI’s V-360+ UV Room Sanitizer provides optimum surface disinfection after regular cleaning and disinfection protocols.  “The revolutionary product generates high intensity UV energy that quickly disinfects surfaces contaminated with viruses, bacteria and fungi,” said Richard Hayes, President of UVDI.  “This includes C. difficile, which the CDC states results in at least 250,000 illnesses and 14,000 deaths each year in the U.S.”

UVDI has released a video showcasing how the V-360 family of products provides optimal mobile surface disinfection, it can be seen at: http://youtu.be/ebtZAkgpkLA
