Toyota to Begin ’RAV4’ SUV Production in Russia in 2016

WEBWIRE

Toyota City, Japan - Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces that Toyota Motor Manufacturing Russia (TMMR), TMC’s vehicle production company in St. Petersburg, Russia, will in 2016 begin producing the “RAV4” crossover SUV for the Russian market. Annual vehicle production capacity at TMMR will be increased from the current 50,000 units up to a maximum of approximately 100,000 units. Plans call for approximately 18 billion yen to be invested in the production expansion and for the hiring of approximately 800 new employees.

In Russia where SUVs are highly popular, the RAV4 is Toyota’s bestselling vehicle with sales of approximately 27,000 units from January through August of this year. Local production of the RAV4 is aimed to meet continued high demand and to enable timelier delivery.

Marking the decision, Didier Leroy, president of Toyota Motor Europe NV/SA, TMC’s holding company in Europe, said: “Since its launch in Russia in 2002, the RAV4 has been extremely well received by Russian consumers. We are committed to continuing our contribution to the development of the Russian automobile industry and providing products that satisfy consumers.”

With high expectations for long-term growth in the Russian market, Toyota has been producing the “Camry” sedan at TMMR since 2007, and, since February this year, assembling the “Land Cruiser Prado” SUV through Sollers-Bussan in Vladivostok.
