The Snake Is Back: The Nike Air Python Returns From Hibernation

26 years after its debut, the Nike Air Python unveils a bold, new skin.

Like a snake that sheds its skin and emerges anew, the Nike Air Python unveils a new look 26 years after its debut.

An exotic cross between the Nike Air Jordan II and Nike Air Force II, the Nike Air Python first appeared in 1987, an era in which revolution was in the air, pop culture was upended by the golden age of hip-hop, and sneakers were transforming from pure performance pieces to fashion icons.

In this dynamic age, the Nike Air Python was equally brash–a sleek, swooshless high top basketball shoe with snakeskin wrapped around the heel, upper quarter and tongue. But similar to the elusive serpent for which it was named, the shoe was rarely seen, released in limited-edition within the U.S.

Decades later, the sneaker is back having replaced its original skin with a bold, new style that reflects the shoe’s basketball heritage and progressive aesthetic. It boasts an upper crafted of premium, full-grain leather, while the tongue, heel, and quarter panels are formed from debossed, printed leather that emulates snakeskin. And just like the original shoe, the sneaker exudes strength and a smooth attitude that set it apart from the pack.

The Nike Air Python drops Sept. 2013 in white/silver, with a white/brown pair to follow in Oct.
