Erlangen, Aug 4, 2006, The Siemens Group Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) received a contract totaling EUR 44 million from the Russian steel producer Nizhnie Sergi Metalware-Metallurgical Plant (NSMMZ), part of the Russian Maxi Group, for the supply of plant components for a new steel mill in Berezovsky, Swerdlovsk. The scope of supply comprises a 120-t Ultimate-type* electric arc furnace (EAF) and an 8-strand billet caster. Following start-up scheduled for the end of 2007, the steel mill will be capable of producing a total of 1.5 million tons of small steel components per year, including tire cord.

NSMMZ (Maxi Group) is a Russian steel producer in Yekaterinburg with nearby manufacturing facilities located in Nizhnie Sergi, Revda and Berezovsky. The steel produced by the company is cast as billets which are rolled to wire rod, bars and angles for use in the construction industry. In order to expand their production output and product range, NSMMZ will build a new steel mill in Berezovsky/Swerdlovsk which will produce a total of 1.5 million t/a of small steel components (e.g., screws, nails) in addition to tire cord. For the project, the German I&S company, VAI Fuchs, will supply a 120 ton electric arc furnace of the Ultimate type. The I&S company VAI Pomini will install an 8-strand billet caster with the corresponding dedusting facilities, electrics and automation.

*)The Ultimate EAF is a new generation of VAI Fuchs electric arc furnaces which enables higher furnace performance in terms of output and steel quality, and tap-to-tap times down to 30 minutes as a result of advanced electric steelmaking technologies and design features.

The VAI group, a division of the Siemens Group Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S), is one of the world’s leading engineering and plant-building companies for the iron and steel industry as well as for the flat-product-rolling sector of the aluminum industry. VAI, derived from the company VOEST-ALPINE Industrieanlagenbau, Linz/Austria, provides a comprehensive range of supplies and services for all related technological processes and integrated automation solutions for the entire life-cycle of metallurgical plants.

The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) is the integrator of systems and solutions for industrial and infrastructure facilities and global service provider for the plant and projects business covering planning, installation, operation and the entire life cycle. I&S uses its own products and systems and process technologies in order to enhance productivity and improve competitiveness of companies in the sectors of metallurgy, water treatment, pulp and paper, oil and gas, marine engineering, open-cast mining, airport logistics, postal automation, intelligent traffic systems and industrial services. In fiscal 2005 (to September 30) I&S employed a total of 31,700 people worldwide and achieved total sales of EUR 5.390 billion.
