Atlanta Legal Nurse Consultant Wrap Up On People’s Law School 2013 Session IV

Atlanta, Georgia -- Atlanta legal nurse consultant Liz Buddenhagen, RN attended the conclusion of this year’s People’s Law School held in Athens, Georgia on August 28, 2013.

Speakers:

Patrick Cates, Esq. of Georgia Legal Services and Shannon Coffey, Esq. of Wiggins, Norris & Coffey were the featured speakers.

Cates, a senior staff attorney, spoke about the help that Georgia Legal Services provides in civil matters. This agency is a private, nonprofit and federally funded agency. The purpose is to support the right to an attorney to those unable to afford an attorney.

Typical cases undertaken include restraining orders, public benefits termination, denial of public benefits, appealed and denied employment benefits and mortgage modification.

Cates also discussed landlord tenant law involving public housing and federally subsidized housing. “Landlord tenant law begins with the lease,” he said. Scenarios given related to eviction, properties in disrepair and documentation importance.

Coffey presented on family law otherwise known as domestic relations law. Areas touched on were adoption, divorce and child custody. Coffey explained she has an interest in particular in children. Coffey offered case scenarios.

Coffey discussed the importance of parents legitimating their children and said “every case is fact specific.” Discussion of the abolishment in Georgia of common law marriage in 1997 ensued. Child support issues were also examined.

People’s Law School:

The People’s Law School is designed to help the public not only know their rights but hopefully appreciate their rights, such as trial by jury. The People’s Law School is sponsored by the Georgia Civil Justice Foundation and is provided as a means to better understand the Georgia court system and its processes, in addition to the law as a whole in our country. 

The fourth annual People’s Law School was organized by:
·       Josh Branch, a personal injury attorney with Silver and Archibald in Athens, Georgia, who chaired this year’s event.
·       Dustin Marlowe, a commercial litigation, wage and hour claims, appeals, and serious personal injury attorney, of Johnson Marlowe in Athens, Georgia.
·       James Hurt, Jr., a personal injury, consumer protection and product liability attorney with Hurt Stolz of Athens and Atlanta, Georgia.
