SAS Veterans Walking 1,600km to raise money and awareness

A group of special forces veterans from Australia’s elite SAS [Special Air Services] who represent veterans from every Australian conflict and war since Korea in the 1950’s are walking 1,600km to raise money and awareness for returned soldiers

The small group of less than a dozen walkers, supported by an equal amount of support personnel [including current, serving members of the Australian Army] set out from Brisbane on the 3rd of August and are planned to finish on the 5th of September in Birdsville, some 1,600km from start to finish. The 33 day trek will see them covering an average of 50km per day, with over 1,200km already covered to date.

The group, representing every conflict and war in which Australia has fought in over the past 60 years, are members and representatives of the Queensland Branch of The SAS Association in Australia.

Michael Donaldson, SAS Veteran and current Director at Intelligent Travel, has personally walked over 500km as part of the group. “The issue of veteran’s support and assistance is something very close to our hearts and we want to do everything we can to support the returned soldiers and their families” he commented. “This is very much a team effort and we can’t thank enough those who have supported us throughout the trek and even more to those that have donated to the charity fund raising.” he concluded.

Patrons and supporters of the charity drive have included both Victoria Cross [VC] heroes from SASR, Mark Donaldson and Ben Roberts-Smith

Celebrity trainer, professional athlete and veteran “Commando Steve” has also supported their efforts and was keynote speaker at the gala dinner event.

The final week of the massive 1,600km trek is being accompanied and supported by Channel 7 Australia. Today was the commencement of a series of short interviews and insights into the usually secretive special forces community’s experiences and their families.

The group have been regularly updating their social media channels on both Twitter and Facebook, with the tens of thousands of fans and supporters getting routine updates from the crew. This has been complimented by their website and a special mobile app set up just for the walk.
