Atlanta, Georgia -- Atlanta legal nurse consultant Liz Buddenhagen continued the four week People’s Law School, peopleslawschool.com, in Athens, Georgia on August 21, 2013.

Speakers:

The Honorable State Court Judge Charles Auslander presented “Views from the Bench” and focused on the justice system in Georgia asking “Is it broke?” and if so, “What is Georgia doing to fix it?”

Auslander said “currently one of seventy adults in Georgia is incarcerated. This is the fourth highest incarceration rate in the United States and the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world.”

This adds up to 56,000 adults incarcerated in Georgia. The State of Georgia spends over one billion dollars per year on the incarcerated.

It is estimated that over sixty percent of incarcerated people are in for drug crimes and property crimes. A lot of the property crimes are drug related.

Auslander furthermore pointed out that the corrections system in Georgia is the largest caretaker of Georgia persons with drug and/or alcohol addiction and mental illness.

He said Governor Deal in 2011 made fourteen recommendations for justice reform in Georgia. One of these is a statewide system of accountability otherwise known as drug court. Another recommendation was for  long term substance abuse centers for appropriate prisoners. These measures aim directly at the problem of reducing the numbers of incarcerated people.

Dustin Marlow, Esq. of Johnson & Marlowe, discussed contracts. A contract is defined as “a promise for the breach of which the law offers a remedy or the performance of which the law recognizes a duty.”

Marlowe said to form a valid contract you need an offer, acceptance and consideration. Both written and oral contracts can be valid.
