A rise in workplace mobility has been revealed in a new network report published by Computacenter. Computacenter’s research reveals that 80 percent of users connect via the corporate Wi-Fi network.

Moreover, 85 percent of employees use a laptop during their working day; 72 percent of organisations have a policy allowing personal devices in the workplace; and 35 percent of corporate users already connect via public alternatives – which come with even greater security risks.

Greater mobility in the workplace is inevitable as on average only 40 percent of employees now use a desktop computer. However, without the right IT infrastructure foundations and usage policies, mobility will never get into the fast lane.

To ensure the WLAN encourages not encumbers mobility, IT departments need to scale up and lock down their infrastructure. Using an inadequate WLAN could hinder the security efforts of an organisation as employees become forced to use public alternatives.

Research shows they need to do it soon.  According to the 2013 State of the Endpoint study by the Ponemon Institute, those organisations leading the mobility charge, ‘the innovators’ have already seen their revenues grow by 44 percent.
