Advice to help people stay safe during the heatwave

WEBWIRE

Barnet Council’s Director of Public Health has issued a number for practical pointers for vulnerable groups such as older people, young children and those with long term health conditions to help them stay safe during the current heatwave.

With temperatures set to remain high Dr Andrew Howe is encouraging residents to take care during the hot spell.

High temperatures can pose health risks for older people, young children and those with serious illnesses like heart disease or long term breathing problems.

It can also affect healthy people - especially if they are doing manual work or sports outside.

People who may be at risk are being advised to stay out of the heat, to keep themselves hydrated and cool with cold drinks and to try and keep the environment they are in cool.

If someone feels unwell, get them somewhere cool to rest. Give them plenty of fluids to drink. If symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, weakness, dizziness or cramps don’t go away or get worse, seek medical help.

Residents are also being encouraged to keep an eye on any vulnerable relatives and neighbours.

Anyone with health problems should store their medication below 25°C or in the fridge in accordance with the storage instructions on the packaging.

The council’s social care staff have also been passing on advice when visiting residents around the borough.

Barnet Council’s Director of Public Health, Dr Andrew Howe, said: “It’s obviously great to be out enjoying the good weather but it’s also important that people who could be vulnerable in the heat, stay safe.

“Older people and those with a chronic medical condition are particularly susceptible and I would encourage residents to keep an eye on relatives and neighbours to help make sure they keep hydrated and cool.”
