The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment will exercise their Freedom of the Borough with a parade through Chipping Barnet.

Soldiers serving with the regiment will take part in the parade on 20 July which will see the regiment march along the High Street from Queen Elizabeth Girls’ School to St Albans Road.

The parade will get underway at 11am.

Residents are invited to line the route of the parade to cheer the troops on.

The Honorary Freedom of the Borough passed to The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (PWRR) as successor to the Queen’s Regiment in 1998.

In recent years the regiment, also known as the Tigers, has completed numerous tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, and also provided security during the Olympic Games.

The 1st Battalion PWRR is due to return to Afghanistan next year.

The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment has a long and distinguished history and draws the majority of its soldiers and officers from Sussex, Surrey, London, Middlesex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

It is the only infantry regiment to recruit from the Channel Islands.

There is also a PWRR-badged rifle company within the Territorial Army’s London Regiment, based in Edgware, known as B (Queen’s Regiment) Company.

The PWRR earned its first battle honour for its part in the Battle of Tangier in 1662.

The regiment is the most decorated of any in the British Army with 57 Victoria Crosses. These include the VC awarded to Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry in 2004 for his gallantry in Iraq.

The Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet Councillor Melvin Cohen said: “The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment has a number of long and venerable links to the borough.

“It is one of a small number of regiments which hold the Freedom of the Borough and with that the privilege to mount a freedom parade such as this.

“It’s a tremendous honour for Barnet to have the regiment on parade and I would encourage as many people as possible to turn out on the day to line the route and cheer them on.”
