Clarks Summit, PA – Highland Associates announces that the Pennsylvania State University--Worthington Scranton Campus, David and Ann Hawk Student Success Center, Dunmore, PA and The St. George Library, Teen Center, Staten Island, NY, have been selected for publication in American School and University 2013 Educational Interiors Showcase.  The projects will be featured in the August 2013 edition of the magazine and also on the Web at www.SchoolDesigns.com.  An annual competition honoring educational interior design excellence, the Educational Interiors Showcase spotlights projects representing some of the most effective learning environments in the country.

Envisioned as a means of providing high-quality, responsive, student-centered services, The David and Ann Hawk Student Success Center on the Pennsylvania State University’s Worthington Scranton Campus, helps undergraduates maximize their potential and succeed both academically and personally.
The newly renovated area brings services that were once spread across the campus to one central location. The campus’ Financial Aid Office, Veterans’ Affairs, Health and Wellness Center, Counseling Services, a learning center, peer tutoring areas, a mini-computer lab, career services, leadership/personal development services and a conference room are no longer separated by physical boundaries. The new space is bright, open, and flexible – drawing students in and fostering collaboration.

In an historic building, adjacent to the New York harbor, St. George Library Teen Center is the only space catering to Young Adults among Staten Island public libraries. The glass windows in the main reading room, which date back to 1907, provide a spectacular view of the harbor. Inspired by the view and community’s connection to the harbor, the Teen Center engages its patrons with a nautical theme. Spanning the ceiling are curved plastic “sails” to simulate the movement of the ocean wind, while ocean colors invigorate the space. The Teen Center creates a dynamic space, separate from the main area, allowing teens to interact and explore the library’s resources and multi-media technology.

A jury of American Institute of Architects (AIA) members and education administrators evaluated submissions for architectural firms, schools and universities across the country.  Each project was judged based on the following considerations: purposeful design, cost-efficient solutions and planning, inviting and engaging spaces, designs that create new solutions and uses, sensitivity to the community, transparent and integrated technology and innovation and creativity.  Highland Associates provided architectural, engineering and interior design services on both of these projects.
