Smart, Fresh and Provocative Perspectives from Compelling Contemporary Voices Selected by NOOK Editors Star-studded Debut Collection Available Now

New Selections Offered Every Other Month for Only $1.99 Each

NEW YORK – – NOOK Media, LLC, a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller and leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products, announced today the launch of NOOK Snaps (www.bn.com/nooksnaps), an innovative bimonthly program offering original, commissioned short-content works by a select group of today’s most compelling voices on the NOOK platform.

Insightful and witty, the NOOK Snaps program features high-quality short fiction and narrative non-fiction hand-picked by NOOK editors offering fresh perspectives on modern life, all in an easy-to-enjoy length and at an attractive price. The program offers 3 to 5 new NOOK Snaps selections of at least 5,000 words every other month for only $1.99 each.

“We believe our collection of bite-sized NOOK Snaps, refreshed bimonthly and offered at a great price, provides a wonderful new way for our readers to connect with some of today’s most compelling voices,” said Theresa Horner, Vice President of Digital Content at NOOK Media. “NOOK Snaps are sure to delight readers with their smart, incisive and provocative points of view told through wonderfully crafted stories. It’s an editorially driven program that reflects our ongoing commitment to high-quality short content delivered on our innovative NOOK platform.”

Jessanne Collins, an author whose essay, How to be a Playgirl, is a selection in the NOOK Snaps debut collection, said: “I’m really excited to be included in the launch of a program that’s going to make the e-publishing marketplace even more vital and diverse.”

Among the titles in the NOOK Snaps debut collection are:

High-Status Characters: How The Upright Citizens Brigade Stormed a City, Started a Scene, and Changed Comedy Forever, by Brian Raftery. Featuring exclusive interviews with comic icons such as Amy Poehler, Conan O’Brien, and Ed Helms, this exhaustive oral history traces the rise of the Upright Citizens Brigade theater, the beloved training ground for many of today’s best-known performers. Equal parts funny and revelatory, it’s an eyewitness account of a comedy revolution.

How to be a Playgirl, by Jessanne Collins. A thought-provoking personal essay by the current managing editor of Mental Floss about her years finding her way as a feminist and journalist, while working as an editor at Playgirl magazine. It’s a coming-of-age tale that features lots of intellectual nakedness, and also some male nudity.

Willing to be Lucky, by Mickey Rapkin. Two poignant personal essays by a former GQ senior editor and author of the book Pitch Perfect, which became a 2012 feature film. Mr. Rapkin explores being young, ambitious and in love in New York City, and the special ways only Manhattan can break your heart -- and bring you back to life.

The Insurrectionist, by Michael Dahlie. An unforgettable short story by the author of the PEN/Hemingway Award-winning novel, A Gentleman’s Guide to Graceful Living. The story follows a rather unsuccessful American businessman living in London. Bumbling and insecure, though simultaneously endearing, William has to figure out how to save face for his loved ones even while his irate co-workers grow sick of his incompetency. The story bounces between a comedy of manners and a disquieting look at how even the most passive of us can be pushed to a breaking point.
