Why should companies offer a whistleblowing service?

Employers have a responsibility for the health and safety of their employees. If, after an employee has approached their line manager, or safety representative or trade union representative, about a risk to their health or the health of others (including members of the public) and he/she is not satisfied that it has been adequately dealt with, the law provides them with protection if they ’blow the whistle’ on their employer

Legislation- UK Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 The Act came into force on 2nd July 1999. It encourages people to raise concerns about malpractice in the workplace and will help ensure that organisations respond by addressing the message rather than the messenger; and resisting the temptation to cover up serious malpractice.

Though the Act does not require organisations to set up or promote any particular whistleblowing procedures, they are strongly recommended.
