McMurray Stern Partners with AECOM and Clark Construction to Build Storage Solution for Long Beach Court Building Project
SANTA FE SPRINGS, CA – June 5, 2013 – McMurray Stern, design build specialty contractor of storage, workspace and records management solutions, was recently awarded the high density storage portion for the Long Beach Court Building renovation project. McMurray Stern will work closely with engineering and construction management firm, AECOM Technical Services, Inc. (NYSE: ACM) and design-build and construction provider, Clark Construction Group, LLC, among other companies to complete the renovation process.
Scheduled for completion in the fall of 2013, the five-story building will house 31 courtrooms, as well as court administration offices, Los Angeles County lease space, and retail leasable space. The new building, named the Governor George Deukmejian Court House, will span two city blocks in downtown Long Beach and include inmate transfer facilities, detention facilities, and separate secure parking areas for judges. A five-level great room atrium will serve as the single entry point for the public and provide access to a secured central courtyard. In addition to the new building, the project team also will renovate and expand an existing 399,000 square-foot parking structure.
McMurray Stern was the chosen design-build contractor for the Long Beach Court Building renovation project. In an effort to accommodate inactive files that are retained within record file boxes, McMurray Stern will be installing the Spacesaver Eclipse high density storage solution in the building’s basement. They will also be installing four systems of various sizes on the first floor (ground floor) and two systems of various sizes on the second floor. All systems installed will provide ease of use and contain a variety of safety and security features.
“Working hand and hand with AECOM for the past 2 years played a key factor in McMurray Stern being awarded this high profile job,” stated Laura Borda, Senior Design Consultant at McMurray Stern. “By closely working with a few key players, we were able to make the necessary design modifications, changes to the construction progress and any additional requirements needed in order to comply with code clearances and budget amounts.”
The contract was awarded in early December 2012 and the installation for the basement began that same month. The basement required a recessed rail with a second pour of concrete, which was uniquely handled by McMurray Stern because of their Class B General Contractor license. The systems are currently in the final installation phase, with a completion date of Fall 2013.
