[Port Washington, NY] -- [May 12, 2013] – Irish-American author Robert Sullivan has issued a new, expanded edition of the world’s most enjoyable book of Irish culture, “The Great Little Book of Fun Things You Probably Don’t Know About Ireland.”

First issued in 2007, this compendium of facts and stories offers unusual observations on Ireland’s still-powerful culture. But its chapter of facts on modern Ireland needed updating, Sullivan says, because “Ireland was at the peak of the Celtic Tiger era when I first wrote the book. Since then, things have changed there, to say the least.” The book is released by Rum Point Digital, Inc. and available on Amazon in print and Kindle formats.

Sullivan grew up in an Irish-American family in the New York area, and was particularly close to his grandfather, who came from a remote part of County Kerry. While attending college in England in the 1970’s, he traveled to his grandfather’s rural township and met his step-aunt – the only one of his grandfather’s eight siblings who did not emigrate to America before World War 1. The township, near Ireland’s rugged west coast, was so backwards at the time that Sullivan says it was “like visiting another planet. My step-aunt’s house had no running water or electricity. It was amazing to find this so close to England, which was nearly as modernized as the U.S.”

Although he’s seen Ireland change since the 1970’s, Sullivan has remained a curator of stories, proverbs, jokes and traditions that define Irish culture. No matter how modern Ireland becomes, he  says, “when you peel back the surface layer, there’s a very unusual world view and sense of humor lurking there that’s a blast to come in contact with.” His book offers a great way for Ireland-lovers to feel close to their favorite country, until they can visit again.
