Should you get a new Mazda6?

WEBWIRE

Mazda launched its all-new Mazda6 at the start of this year, giving drivers the choice of a Saloon and Tourer. What Car? has already bestowed an Ultra-low Carbon award on the latest model, as emissions have been reduced to as little as 108g/km. It’s billed as a family-friendly model with the potential to work harder - but will it suit everyone?

The sharper, more professional look of the Saloon is perfect for executive drivers, and those with families might be a little reluctant to let the kids loose in it. The Tourer shares many of the car’s design points with additions to show its potential, including roof rails and stronger body lines. Both have been designed under Mazda’s new “KODO - Soul of Motion” ethos. In the cabin, all of the primary buttons and switches have been placed within “arm’s length” of the steering wheel - which may be either a help or a hindrance, depending on how long your arms are.

At the SE trim level for the Tourer, power is provided by a 148bhp diesel engine that’s not available for any other version. This could be a bone of contention for Saloon drivers who don’t get the option. They do, however, have the choice of 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre diesels, as do buyers who pick the Tourer with other trims. Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology is built into every engine, boosting the fuel economy to 67.3 MPG and driving CO2 emissions down.

There’s no downside to the safety of the model, as the Mazda6 has been awarded the full five-star rating from EuroNCAP - the benefit of comprehensive security is something we can all agree on.

Overall, the new Mazda6 is a step in the right direction for the manufacturer. The outer style could polarise opinion, but we all know that it’s the comfort, performance and convenience on the inside that counts. In that aspect, the Mazda6 doesn’t disappoint - it’s powerful, reliable, and gentler on the environment.
