Volvo – optimising car safety since 1927

WEBWIRE

Ever since its establishment in Gothenburg, Sweden, over 80 years ago, Volvo has been producing some of the safest cars on the market.

The first Volvo model, called Jakob, was designed to withstand the harsh Swedish climate, and this legacy of robust construction continued through the years. In 1959 the Volvo Amazon and PV544 models were fitted with the first ever three-point safety belts, developed by Volvo’s pioneering head of safety engineering, Nils Bohlin. Three-point safety belts are still used today, as proof of Volvo’s lasting impact.

The introduction of the first Volvo sports cars in the 1960s lent even greater weight to the Volvo team’s safety research, and throughout the decade crumple zones, collapsible steering columns and rear-facing child seats were all introduced to the Volvo range.

These days, the Volvo models are faster and more dynamic than ever before. The Volvo S60’s formidable T6 engine can propel it from 0-60mph in just 6.1 seconds, whilst even the XC90, which seats seven people, can power to a high speed of 127mph. This means that safety must be of paramount importance, and with innovative new mechanisms constantly being developed by Volvo, it’s no wonder the Swedish manufacturer is still one of the biggest names in the automotive industry.

In 2009 the Volvo XC60 won the Paul Pietsch Award for its City Safety system, which is fitted as standard and monitors the traffic around you to detect danger. The V40, an innovative hatchback, picked up two Croatian safety awards in 2013, thanks in part to features like Adaptive Cruise Control and a Pedestrian Airbag system, which links with Pedestrian Detection to minimise risk to you, as well as the people around you.
